In this proposal for a new Swedish embassy in the U.S, Washington DC one important goal was to create an interesting platform for meetings.
Three aspects are important in describing the general concept of the building –the “podium”, the glass façade and the roof terrace.
The elevated black granite podium came about in a process that was originated in an attempt to solve flooding problems on the site. On it we placed the public, open functions such as an exhibition space and a large conference room.
We wanted to give a very direct and straightforward image of our interest in building in an environment-friendly fashion -therefore the façade entirely made out of sun-cell panels.
The top of the facade meets the high grass planted in the roof garden, this contrast can be seen as a metaphor for the variations the building offers.
